We can change the world by changing
how we teach our children.

Hi. My name is Mia Shimaj and I greatly care about the education of our children. I am the founder of Unique Teach®, a company that helps provide quality instruction to preschool and elementary school children.

I believe that schools in the United States need to provide a better education for our preschool and elementary school students. Although many children are capable of learning the material, they struggle due to ineffective and outdated teaching methods such as:

  • memorization
  • drilling
  • worksheets
  • flash cards
  • random lists of spelling words
  • random lists of sight words
  • word sorts
  • consonant-vowel patterns

For example, for homework my child had to learn a random list of vocabulary words by copying the dictionary verbatim. This is a mindless, tedious task and does not help the child learn and apply the information to a real-life context.

Poor teaching methods also negatively affect children’s social and emotional development.  Children who are “lost” during instruction may believe that they are less intelligent, while others may disengage and stop paying attention, causing behavioral problems.

It is time that schools acknowledge the shortcomings of current teaching practices and replace them with more effective and innovative methods. We need to focus less on what to teach, but rather on how to teach. Many alternative and more effective methods are described in my book, Unique Teach: Effective Teaching Methods for Young Learners by Mia Shimaj.
